    I am grumpy.

Jeanie is feeding the heel from the load of bread to Dolly.

Dolly lets me feed her from my hand. So she's not possessive about food. When we visted the Jones' last week, she grabbed one of the other doggie rawhide bone, and she let me take it back with only a little coaxing.

I am teaching her "leave it" and "wait." Jeanie is teaching her "shake" "roll over" and "spin around."

Whenever I sit at the computer, I have to pet her for a while. She'll lift her snout up under my hand at the keyboard if I don't.

    The Gathering Storm
I finished "The Gathering Storm," the first posthumous Wheel of Time book, written by Brandon Sanderson. I began being optimistic when Orson Scott Card wrote a complimentary review of Brandon Sanderson's other works.

I liked it. I have tried to write without any spoilers.
Where to begin... Sanderson saved the characters. In the later books, Jordan had been diminishing some of the characters, making them more petty, less consequential, or annoying. Sanderson revived the elements of several characters that made them interesting in the first several books.
It never bogged down for me. Sometimes detail is great, making the story more engaging, and sometimes it makes me not want to repeat reading a book. I won't be skipping sections in "The Gathering Storm" on repeat readings.

Many plot lines where resolved, some minor some not. Some rushed, some not, and a few were both.

I estimate it took me approximately 10 hours to finish.

    Dolly
We have adopted a 4 year old standard poodle named Dolly. We got her from Carolina Poodle Rescue; she's had at least 2 prior owners and one foster mom. We named her Dolly on Saturday, and she is now responding to it, sometimes.

She is still a little uncertain. Unexpected noises or motions can startle her, but it doesn't take much to settle her down, and she is more or less a calm dog. The foster mom told us that she is especially skittish with men; it took 3 weeks before Dolly was ok with the foster-dad. Dolly was coming to me to get petted within 30 minutes while we were still at the farm the Rescue is located on.

She walks well on a leash. I am training her to turn left, turn right, wait, and I am going to try to teach "go home."

We went to the zoo yesterday, for an after-dark tour. A 14 foot anaconda tried to eat Jeanie. She was looking at it when it struck at her; the glass stopped it and it fell in the water. It was about 6 feet away from the glass before striking.

Jeanie made a bunch of noises after that, and she jumped around for a bit.

We went to Cumberland Island today. Saw about 20 wild horses, nearly that many turkey, some deer, the beach, and the ruins of the Carnegie Mansion that was burned by arson in the late 50's. Sometime we need to go camping there.

Last week I attended the Federal Region 4 Regional Response Team meeting, which is a conference of all the state and federal emergency response agencies, plus a number of corporations, that have duties east of the Mississippi and south of Kentucky. Most of it would only be interesting to people doing hazardous material response, or disaster response. The GIS capabilities for emergency response is getting very sophisticated. It's really gonna get neat once Building Information Modeling gets added into the existing GIS and CAD softwares.

I am learning how to use Google Sketchup. Google is becoming too smart for its own good.

    Another one bites the dust.
my laptop in failing. That would be 3 PC failures within one year. I live appropriated another of Jeanie's PC's, this time her laptop. It's going to take a while to truly transfer operations since I am also moving from microsoft money to Quicken. the laptop thing makes me switch sooner.

    drawings, more wildlife
I've been working on a storm water system design for a LEED office. I finished the drawings last week, and turned them in to the state for a permit, and to the architect who is responsible for the whole design. The architect was impressed with my drawings; don't know what to think about that. Maybe the architect is laughing at me. Maybe I failed to make them sufficiently engineering-drawings.

Last week I saw lots of turkeys. I was able to get within 50 feet of some. Other than that, I tried to avoid critters, especially the 2 legged ones.

By the way, the apple pie turned out good. It was a marlborough apple pie, so it's made with an apple custard filling. I need to practice more, cause I think the custard should have set up a little bit more firm. One lemon per 3 apples might have been a tiny bit too much lemon. I think it would be an excellent with rubarb replacing the apple.

Boring day... dull meeting this morning, and not much production this afternoon.

We went kayaking yesterday, and saw 3 dolphins. It's possible that we saw one twice.

Today I saw a black bear running away.

    A Productive week
On tuesday I finish the drawings, calculations, aerial photographs, and forms for the stormwater permit for my new office. Now all I need is the Office of Management and Business, or Congress, to let us build.

Today I am finishing up a credenza for the television; it's my first piece of real furniture. I'm ready to start a new project.

2 days ago I had the dead tree in the front yard cut down. Yesterday I moved it all to the curb. Since it was an oak, someone came by in the afternoon an took all the non-rotted pieces away to sell for firewood.

    Today, I'm making apple pie.

    More wildlife

Saw a rainbow snake in the office today. It's a very rare snake... we have two snake buffs in the office and neither had ever seen one before.

    Tallahassee again
I am in Tallahassee this week for work. I came here with with one mission to work on. Since originally scheduling this trip, I've had 1 added purpose.

I have not worked any on the original mission, or the secondary. I think I need 2 of me.

a clue to what my summer will be like
I may be in travel status for every-other week beginning this month through september. The rate at which I've been falling behind is going to increase.

Went to the Ocala yesterday; not much interesting, all the construction stopped due to 18 inches of rain in the past several days.

Saw a rattlesnake on the road, and 2 feral hogs/pigs eating something on the side of the road.

I think the washing machine is broken behind my ability to repair. :(
    7:39 pm
I think that I fall a little bit farther behind each week. I have one project that I am dedicating 3 weeks to, which in and of itself puts me further behind on everything else.

I have things interfering with that project of course.

I will not be going to practice for 3 weeks, but I am training for the pack-test for wildland fire fighting which may be intense enough to me from getting antsy.

I made cookies yesterday for a social event that was in the evening. A darn good feeling occurred when I saw someone who was packing up their food eat one my cookies, an then wrapped up about 6 more to take home.

I am watching a Star Trek TNG episode right now that I have never seen before. A bunch of Irish who don't know anything about machines just got saved from a doomed planet.
